A new kitchen or bathroom is a significant undertaking – in terms of both time and money. Often overlooked, coloured sealant, is the unifying element that can take either project from middle of the road to masterpiece.
When we invest as much as we do in revamping our kitchens and bathrooms, it’s a real labour of love – but also a big hit to our bank balance. Collectively, the British public spends millions of pounds to create an envy-of-the-neighbours centrepiece and a cocoon of refined tranquility in each room, respectively.
We pick out the perfect countertops, flooring, cabinets and fixtures as the headline acts to make this grand vision a reality, but often forget there’s one simple substance that can bring each of these elements together to create a unified masterpiece: coloured silicone sealant, sometimes called coloured caulk. Utilised as a gap-filler and sealant, a colour match sealant can unite everything with a seamless aesthetic and level of refinement that will really stand out.
- Prepare. In order to form the most effective seal with your colour match sealant, brush or wipe away any dust and debris from the area you are working with.
- Tape. To ensure a precise, smooth bead of coloured sealant for tile, coloured bathroom sealant or coloured exterior sealant, apply masking tape to each side of the joint you’re sealing.
- Cut. Prime the caulk cylinder by cutting an aperture at the tip of its application syringe that is the same size as the joint. Cut it at a 45-degree angle and err on the side of caution – if the aperture is too small, you can always make it larger, but not vice versa.
- Seal. Attach a sealant gun to the tube and, gently squeezing the trigger, steadily apply the colour sealant from one end of the joint to the other.Â
- Smooth. Run a smoothing tool over the bead of freshly applied coloured sealant to give it a smooth finish.Â
- Finish. Remove the masking tape and follow the instructions to see how long it must be left to dry.
- Squeeze. Cut the base off a tube of white sealant, such as UniBond Easy Smooth Sealant, and squeeze it all out onto a clean plastic tray ready for mixing.
- Mix. Pour a small amount of the latex paint onto the caulk and use a wooden paint stick to mix the two together. If the color is too light, pour in more paint, mix again and repeat until it matches the shade you are looking for.
- Return. Gently lift the plastic tray and carefully pour your custom colour sealant back into the tube. Fix the base tightly back onto the tube using duct or high-strength tape. It’s now ready to use!
UniBond’s comprehensive range of sealants has exactly what you need.Â
