Objects exposed to extreme heat need to be fixed with an adhesive that’s just as tough. Our guide to heat resistant silicone and heat resistant caulk will show you how to choose the best adhesive for the job.
Heat resistant silicone, also known as high temperature silicone, is an extremely strong, long-lasting adhesive that can withstand exposure to high temperatures. Unlike regular sealants, it’s specially formulated to cope with even the hottest temperatures, and, in some cases, direct exposure to flames. High temperature silicone dries slowly and is a flexible and durable adhesive, making it a popular choice with DIYers and professionals alike.
If you’re working with an area or joint that’s likely to be exposed to extreme temperatures – hot or cold – you should use a high temp sealant. Standard high temp sealants can withstand temperatures of up to 300 °C, while industrial strength sealants can take extremely high temperatures – up to 1200 °C.
High heat silicone is ideal for work on the following areas:
- Cars (particularly engine gaskets and fuel pump covers)
- Kitchen ovens
- Ductwork
- Furnaces
- Heavy machinery and industrial gaskets
High temp sealants are often used for industrial repair work, but they’re good to have at home too – you never know when they might come in handy!
It may sound obvious, but when you’re choosing a sealant, make sure the product is clearly labelled either as a heat resistant silicone or a high temperature silicone, or something very similar. Regular sealants won’t be able to cope with extreme temperatures. You might prefer to choose silicone over heat resistant caulk as silicone is more flexible, and suited for areas that expand or contract.
