Gluing fabric to wood: A simple method with spray adhesive

When you’re gluing fabric to wood, choosing the right adhesive is essential. Find out why spray adhesive is your best option and learn how to attach fabric to wood in no time.

GLUING FABRIC TO WOOD: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Attaching fabric is a great way to add a decorative touch to a piece of furniture, and make it look new again. With this simple addition you can upcycle some shelves, a side table, or an old chest of drawers.

Of course, you may be wondering how to attach fabric to wood – what’s the best method?

First and foremost, don’t be tempted by a standard liquid glue. While liquid glues are compatible with most materials, the adhesive will most likely seep through, staining the fabric. Liquid glue also tends to pool, so it’s hard to apply evenly. As a result, you may end up with bumps and wrinkles in the fabric.

We recommend using spray adhesive instead. Overall, it’s the best glue for fabric to wood.

Unlike liquid glue, spray adhesive is ideal for achieving smooth, even coverage on fabric surfaces. There’s no need to worry about seepage or wrinkles.

Spray adhesive is also very easy to apply – simply shake the can, spray the adhesive, and stick the surfaces together. For more detailed instructions, check out the section below and learn how to glue fabric to wood like a professional, so you can achieve the perfect finish.

How to attach fabric to wood

First, make sure you have everything you need:

  • spray adhesive
  • wooden object
  • piece of fabric
  • pair of scissors

When you’re gluing fabric to wood, use a large piece of fabric – more than you think you need.

Generally, it’s best to apply the piece of fabric so it extends a few inches over the edge. Then, after gluing the fabric in place, you can cut off the excess material.

Before you start applying the adhesive, make sure the room is well-ventilated.

Here’s how to glue fabric to wood with spray adhesive:

  1. Prepare your work surface and materials. Cover the work surface and surrounding area with scrap paper. Make sure the wood and fabric are completely clean and dry.
  2. Prepare the spray adhesive. Read the instructions and familiarise yourself with the product and any safety precautions. Shake the can about 10 times.
  3. Apply the adhesive. Hold the can vertically, keeping it about 10 inches away from the wood surface while you spray. Move the can in a smooth, continuous motion to apply a light, even coat.
  4. Attach the fabric to the wood. Use your hand to smooth the fabric.
  5. If necessary, reposition immediately. Lift the fabric from the corner and readjust. It may be necessary to apply more adhesive.
  6. Wait for the glue to dry. Avoid using the object until the glue has dried. Check product instructions for information about dry time.
  7. Clean the can. Turn the spray adhesive can upside down and spray for 2 seconds to clear it. Then store the can in a cool, dry place.
  8. Remove excess fabric. Once the glue has dried, use scissors to cut off any overhanging fabric.

If you’re working with a particularly thick or heavy piece of fabric, you may want to create a stronger bond.

In that case, apply the spray adhesive to both the wood and the fabric. Wait for the glue to dry, which can take up to 10 minutes, and then attach the fabric to the wood.
