Your bathroom and kitchen are showing signs of wear and tear? Replacing old and shabby tiles are a great start for a fresh new look. What’s best about it? You can do it all by yourself with the right tile adhesive!
For a tiling project on a large scale, you might want to call in a professional. But if it’s a small area, like your kitchen backsplash or a loose tile in the bathroom, you can handle it yourself. It’s a straightforward job, but also a very important one that requires a good quality flexible tile adhesive. With the right waterproof tile glue adhesive at your disposal, you can prevent mildew and mould and keep your home in great condition for years to come.
To apply indoor floor tile adhesive or wall tile adhesive, just follow these steps. Note that you may want to take the additional step of installing a cement backer board first as this will make your tiling last longer.
- Prepare the area by cleaning thoroughly, and getting rid of any dirt, old caulk or mould. Cleaning is especially important if you’re working with a surface that’s exposed to moisture.
- Dry the surface. Use a cloth or towel to make sure the area is completely free from moisture.
- Check the layout. Make sure you’re happy with the tile position and spacing before you get out the glue.
- Apply the adhesive. Use a notched trowel to spread the adhesive evenly on the floor, wall or backer board.
- Insert the tile. Press the tile carefully and firmly onto the area with the adhesive. Using tile spacers will help you to ensure that the tiles are completely even.
- Leave the tiles to dry. Wait at least 24 hours.
- Apply the grout. Use a rubber grout float to make sure the grout gets in all the gaps.
- Get rid of excess grout. Use a damp sponge to remove the grout, then dry the surface.
- Seal the grout. Don’t miss this important last step. To prevent moisture absorption and eventual mould, you should use sealant.
We recommend choosing a ready mixed tile adhesive, as this will save you time and hassle. It’s also important to purchase a tile adhesive that’s suitable for your particular DIY project. Are the tiles placed indoors or outdoors, will you be working with wood, concrete or ceramic? These are all things you need to consider when choosing the best tile adhesive for your needs.
